You will need to send in a new application after the year.  The decision was made because many situations have changed when we called to see if applicants were still interested. They already got a dog, moved out of our covered area or their financial and home situation changed. Thanks for your understanding.

SPECIAL NOTE:  OUR RESCUES WILL NOT BE ADOPTED TO HOMES OR PLACE THERE AS A FOSTER DOG, IF ALL OF YOUR CURRENT DOGS ARE NOT SPAYED OR NEUTERED,  UNLESS THERE IS A MEDICAL REASON FOR THAT FAMILY DOG NOT BEING FIXED.  (A VETERIARAIN LETTER WOULD BE REQUIRED AS PROOF. )  YOUR UNDERSTANDING IS APPRECIATED.

FAQ:

Q:  What  is it like to have a pug as a pet?
A:  One of the best descriptions of the pros and cons for having pug as a pet is found on this website:
                      www.frankthepug.org
If you have not had a pug in your care before, please read the information on this website to decide if the pug is the breed for you and your family!

Q:  What is the purpose of a pug rescue?
A:  Situations arise when a pug cannot be kept by his owner anymore.  PRoCNY exists to rehome pugs for people who can no longer care for  or keep their pugs for any reason.

Q:  What happens to the pug once she is accepted into the rescue program?
A:  All pugs are given a physical exam by a veterinarian and has any underlying medical needs addressed.  The pugs are brought up to date on vaccinations, heartworm testing and fecal testing.  The pugs are also neutered or spayed.  Pugs are kept in foster care to observe temperament and general characteristics.  Applications are screened and soon the pug is on her way to a new loving home!

Q:  What happens if a pug cannot be adopted?
A:  There are not any time limits placed on rescue pugs.  A pug will be with us until he finds a home.  If necessary, a pug can become a permanent member of our group, and essentially be adopted by one of our members.

Q:  Does your pug rescue have a kennel?
A:  No.  All rescue pugs are kept in private homes, and are treated like members of the family.  Due to housebreaking issues, a pug may be crated at first when no one is home, but otherwise the pug would have free access around the house.

Q:  Why is there an adoption fee?
A:  On average, we spend $100-700 per pug on just medical fees alone.  The most we have spent on a pug is over $1000.  Our adoption fee is used to reimburse members part or all of these expenses.  Overall,  our group does not profit from the adoption fees, and we rarely break even.

Q:  Is there a fee associated with surrendering a pug?
A:  No.

Q:  How do I surrender a pug to your rescue group?
A:  Just contact us by email at pughugs@usa.net or call Ronnie at (315) 487-2500.  We ask that you obtain your pug's veterinary records, if available,  and bring along any toys or items belonging to your pug for emotional comfort.  You will be asked to fill out a short form regarding your pug's history and personality.  You must sign a statement relinquishing all rights of ownership.

Q:  If I surrender a pug, will I be able to know who adopts him/her, and can I stay in touch with them?
A:  No.  While we are willing to tell you in general terms what the pug's new home is like, name and addresses of adopters are kept confidential.

Q:  Are rescue pugs ever euthanized?
A:  Euthanasia is an absolute last resort in cases where a pug is suffering from a disease/condition that cannot be cured, and the pain/discomfort cannot be controlled.  Such a decision requires the opinion of two veterinarians who deem the quality of life poor and options exhausted.

Q:  How do I adopt a pug?
A:  You must fill out and send in an adoption application.  Or you can contact pughugs@usa.net for an on-line application.  Once your application is on file, we will review it when a pug becomes available.  We do not adopt out pugs on a first come, first served basis.  We do our best to match each pug with the most well-suited home.  For example, if a particular pug didn't like cats, we obviously wouldn't place him in a home with one.  If we feel a suitable pug is available for you, we will start the screening process on your application.  The screening process includes a vet reference check (if available), two other reference checks and a home visit.

Q:  How long do I have to wait to adopt a pug?
A:  The wait can vary greatly.  It is determined mainly by your preferences in a pug.  For example, if you only want a perfectly healthy pug under one year of age, you are probably going to wait forever, simply because those pugs are rarely found in rescue.  The more flexible you are with the pug's gender, color and age, the shorter your wait may be.

Q: Does PRoCNY accept donations?
A:  Yes! PRoCNY is incorporated under 501(c)3 status, which means it is a legal charity, and donations are tax-deductible in accordance with IRS rules. If you would like to donate money, please use the PayPal option, or send it to the address below. If you have items you think PRoCNY could use, please email us and let us know!  All checks should be written out to: Pug Rescue of Central New York and sent t0:
